Gerald Hopkins

Superintendent

Gerald (Jerry) W. Hopkins, JR has served as Kenowa Hills Public Schools superintendent since 2011. Since joining, Jerry led the creation of a district partnership with Davenport University to implement a Middle College Program, allowing students to earn an Associate’s Degree while still enrolled at Kenowa Hills Public Schools. He also launched Pathways, a blended learning program to provide a non-traditional instructional setting for high school learners. An advocate for school safety, under Jerry’s leadership, the community passed a $55 million bond proposal in 2016, which included new secure entrances for every school building in the district, and a $67 million bond in 2020 to renovate and equip all of its schools to meet the needs of today’s learners.

Leading a district in a highly competitive region, Jerry has seen how a comprehensive communications strategy, coupled with a staff engaged in marketing from the inside out, can turn around enrollment declines. For over eight school years, Kenowa Hills has invested in marketing and Jerry has seen the benefits pay off in the district’s reputation, quality of communications, and student retention.

Developing and implementing a comprehensive communication strategy is critical for the success and sustainability of any school district. Public schools are facing an unprecedented level of outside pressure which has escalated the need to “tell your story” in an impactful and relevant way. Effective communication strategies require four key components: Insight - Strategy - Execution - and Management. Being intentional in each of these areas is crucial to frame the perception and narrative of your learning community in order to stay relevant and engage with your communities and families.
